The ‘Jom Masuk U’ Carnival is an annual outreach programme that has been held by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) since 2005 based on the positive feedback from students, parents, counselors and the public. From 2010 onwards, the National Higher Education Carnival will be the signature programme of MOHE.
This year, the ‘Jom Masuk U’ Carnival 2010 will kick off on 9 January at PERSADA in Johor Bahru and then proceed to nine other destinations. The objective of the carnival is to educate and motivate university applicants to obtain accurate and up-to-date information on higher education opportunities in Malaysia.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the purpose of the carnival was to provide convenience to universities and applicants whereas career counselling would enable students to make “informed choices”. Students at the carnival will also learn more about the new courses offered at public universities as well as the selection criteria used to place the applicants. Presently, applications to public universities are sorted based on a student’s academic and co-curriculum scores which carry a weighting of 90% and 10% respectively. Students will also have the opportunity to get more information about the online application process.
The carnival is targeted primarily at school leavers who have completed SPM, STPM, STAM or matriculation as well as teachers, counselors, parents and the public. Among the activities lined up during the carnival are talks and interactive forums that focus on specialised topics conducted by representatives of public universities, various departments and agencies of MOHE, Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Negara (PTPTN), Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Bahagian Matrikulasi Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia (BMKPM), and many more.
